Why does nobody talk about commercial tree plantations when discussing wildfires?

Has anyone else noticed that every discussion about wildfires immediately jumps to climate change, while land management barely gets mentioned?

Climate change absolutely makes heatwaves and droughts worse, but it isn't the only factor.

In places like Spain and Portugal, huge areas of native woodland have been replaced with commercial eucalyptus and pine plantations. These trees grow fast, which is great for the paper and timber industries, but they're also generally more flammable than many native broadleaf forests. Dense monoculture plantations can let fires spread much faster once they start.

Ireland is a bit different. Most wildfires are actually on bogs and heathland rather than forests, but commercial Sitka spruce plantations can also burn more intensely than native mixed woodland.

From what I've read, the evidence suggests it's a combination of:

  • Hotter, drier weather.
  • Land abandonment and fuel build-up.
  • Large commercial monoculture plantations.
  • Human-caused ignitions.

It seems misleading to frame it as **only** a climate issue when forest composition and land management clearly influence how severe fires become.

Am I missing something, or should we be talking a lot more about what we're planting as well as the climate?
